Cardinals usually raise two broods of young each year. They mate in March and again from May through July. The female typically lays 2-4 eggs with an incubation period of about 12 days. They build cup-shaped nests in small trees, bushes, shrubs and thick vines that are 3 to 8 feet off the ground. Their nests consist of twigs, bark, grass, moss and other soft materials. Young cardinals will leave the nest after only 11 days and begin to fly within 20 days!
We would like to thank Leslie Wilder for monitoring and capturing the daily growth of these adorable northern cardinals. Leslie used her cell phone camera to obtain each photograph and remained a safe distance from the nest at all times. We cropped her images so that everyone could all enjoy a closer view!
